An adaptation of local author Nan Lincoln’s remarkably true children’s books, told through original music, puppets, and audience participation.
The musical tells the story of Cecily, a harbor seal pup that Nan Lincoln raises on Mount Desert Island in the summer of 1976. This family friendly production will feature local young people who can attend a puppet-making workshop with the creative team on the afternoon of the performance.
The Barn Arts Collective is a live arts organization based out of Bass Harbor, Maine. In addition to hosting residencies for artists developing new work, the organization also runs arts education programs for the community and produces new works of theatre for intergenerational audiences.
Cecily’s Summer is a musical written by Barn Arts Collective Co-Artistic Directors, Andrew Simon and Brittany Parker, based on the popular children’s books by local Mount Desert Island author, Nan Lincoln. The story follows the triumphs and challenges that Nan encounters as she finds and cares for an abandoned baby seal pup, which she names Cecily. Told from two perspectives, that of Nan and of Cecily, the musical explores the growth of this beautiful friendship between human and animal.
The Barn Arts Collective hosts over 100 artists each summer and fall to develop and perform new works of performance out of their Barn in Bass Harbor, Maine. In addition to the Barn, Barn Arts productions have also been presented at the Criterion Theatre in Bar Harbor, the Grand Theatre in Ellsworth, the Strand Theatre in Rockland, Mayo Street Arts in Portland, the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City, and Cloud City in Brooklyn, NY.
