Portland-based teaching artists Kafari (rhythm bones, piano) and Jake Hoffman (banjo, guitar, voice) will lead an experience that is part music class and part history lesson. After a brief performance with historical context, workshop attendees will have the chance to learn to play the bones – an ancient percussion instrument played by holding two in one hand, flicking the wrist forward and backward to create sound. After a series of group rhythm bones exercises, attendees will rattle along to a variety of different banjo and fiddle tunes, placing their newly developed rhythm bones skills to use in a communal playalong! No prior musical experience is required.
