In partnership with the Winter Harbor Public Library, we will host Award-winning science writer and Corea resident Margie Patlak, who will talk about her recent book More Than Meets the Eye: Exploring Nature and Loss on the Coast of Maine.
Patlak will discuss what the nature of Maine taught her about the nature of life, renewal and what remains once the ashes are spread.
Patlak’s book explores the unique nature of the Maine coast, including its dramatic tides, weather, and continental collisions that thrust up and fractured its mountains. Patlak also digs into the latest scientific thinking about how animals navigate, the biology of moose, foxes and porcupines, and exults in the dizzy dance of plankton under her microscope. Facets of the natural world speak a hidden language Patlak translates with her scientific knowledge and reflection.
More Than Meets the Eye was given the 2022 “Outstanding Book” award by the American Society of Journalists and Authors. Sy Montgomery called More Than Meets the Eye “a beautiful and surprising book in which bereavement gives way to awe and the secrets of Maine’s rocky coast offer a path to grace.” Bernd Heinrich wrote “To read this book is to gain a deep perspective for living and enjoying the real world, the one of nature.”
