Juliane & Christopher have been performing and writing music together since they met at the University of Maine music program in the 90s. They formed New Shades of Blue in 2009. Since then the band has been a sharing their music throughout the State of Maine and New England at festivals, fairs, clubs and private events. They please audiences with an eclectic mix of covers & originals influenced by the groups’ love of jazz, blues, pop and reggae. The core of the band is Juliane Gardner – lead vocalist & keyboards & Christopher Poulin – lead vocals, guitar, & flute. At an early age, Juliane was introduced to her father’s love for jazz, and eventually emulated jazz greats such as Carmen McRae, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, LHR, & Thelonious Monk. Juliane is also influenced by singer/songwriters such as Paul Simon, Patty Griffin, Ani Difranco, Martin Sexton & James Taylor. One can hear the mixing of these two aesthetics in her albums, Packsaddle Road released in 2003 & You’ll Find it When You’re Not Looking, in 2009. Juliane’s composition; Love & Comforting, was included in the ABC TV show Men in Trees. Christopher began playing guitar at the age of 9 when he wore out the needle on his first record player listening to the Beatles. Chris went on to get a Bachelor’s degree in jazz from UMA, and a Master’s degree in jazz and classical guitar from Youngstown State University in Ohio. Chris played in the YSU Big Band that won the award in Downbeat Magazine for best college big band in the US. He has performed with jazz great Kenny Burrell, Sean Jones, Bob Moses, James Weidman, and vocalist Deborah Davis. His influences include Wes Montgomery, BB King, Chet Baker, Nat King Cole, Eric Dolphy, and Bob Marley among others.
