Fused Glass - Transparent Overlay: Through the Looking Glass

*** Intro to Fused Glass is a

prerequisite for this class. ***

Transparent glasses may appear dull by comparison to the vivid, bold colors available in opaque glass, but are

ultimately more versatile than opaques because they have their own color. They can also be used to modify the color of

other glass, both transparent and opaque.

In this class we will discuss and demonstrate how to manipulate existing

colors, how to change the saturation of colors, and even make new colors.

The class will include a very brief recap of the relevant concepts taught in Intro to Fused Glass as well as an

explanation and demonstration of how to use sheet glass to dilute or deepen color saturation in transparent glasses. Additionally, students will be taught how to

use transparent glasses to create new opaque colors in an individual glass project. We’ll also provide basic instruction on using

small glass grinders if needed.

Join us in this transformative class and unlock the sacred artist within. Watercolor will be the medium of choice.

Finding One’s Way with Clay - 07/27/24

Finding One’s Way with Clay

Students will explore the art of working with clay as a form of meditation. Drawing inspiration from the hand building techniques of renowned artist Paulus Berensohn, students will have the opportunity to slow down, relax, and tap into their creativity. They will learn how to use nature forms to imprint and inspire their clay creations. They will also be introduced to hand building techniques for creating both round and thin forms. However, the focus of this class is not on achieving technical perfection, but rather on enjoying the zen of being with clay in a supportive community. Open to individuals of all levels and backgrounds. (photo credit: Photo of the artist, Paulus Berensohn by True Kelly)

Watercolor Basics

Paint the coast you love! Sky, water, rocks, trees and more. If you have never painted in watercolors we will start at the beginning. If you have painted before, there are many tips and tricks for different results.

August 2, 2024  9:00am - 4:00pm AND

August 3, 2024  9:00am - 4:00pm

Ages: Adult

Bring List:

This is a list of things that I have found work especially well for painting may help you to make choices when shopping for materials. A few things are quite specific, like the paper and a stiff oil painter’s brush for texture. The colors are the colors that I use myself, but you are welcome to use your old favorites. The only thing that I’m really a stickler about is the paper; it must be 100% cotton rag paper. If it’s not, the painting will be a constant struggle. You won’t need more than a few sheets of it.

Paints: I am using Winsor and Newton Tube Paints: a limited palette. Cotman are ok and are cheaper. Shirley’s has Cotman, I think. The reason I like Winsor Newton is that there is more pigment and so the color is richer. But they are pricey. A small tube will last for years. https://www.dickblick.com/products/winsor-newton-cotman-watercolor-tubes/ Stay away from the kits of colors. You only need a few and we will mix the rest. I’ve painted thousands of paintings and I never use any colors except these 5. Well, except a little white gauche to splatter flowers into a field. These colors are good Maine colors. French Ultra Marine Blue, Alizarin Crimson,(or cad Red Med.), New Gamboge Yellow (or Cad. yellow med.), Olive Green( or Sap), Burnt Sienna.

Brushes: Shirley’s has some excellent and inexpensive ROYAL brushes. (or use Cotman Series 111) https://www.dickblick.com/products/winsor-newton-cotman-watercolor-brushes/, #2 round, #6 round, 1/2" flat

Palette: A white watercolor pallet with adequate mixing surface, and a cover. Shirley’s in Hancock has these as well as most box stores. The small folding ones are fine. https://www.dickblick.com/products/masters-international-folding-watercolor-palette/

Paper: We will cut these large sheets in to several pieces. Just get one sheet of each if you can. Shirley’s has the Arches paper but not the Bristol board. Arches 140 pound cold press https://www.dickblick.com/items/arches-natural-white-watercolor-paper-16-x-20-cold-press-single-sheet/

Other helpful things: Ruler, Pencil, Eraser, Sketch paper. I use the back of old computer paper. Razor blades (single edge), Masking tape, Water container – a yogurt container is fine, Viva Signature Cloth paper towels (Hannaford has these), Clip board for holding paper (like you would use in an office). If we take a trip to the shore you should bring folding chair and perhaps a small folding table (optional) Or just sit on a rock and paint!

Watercolor Painting Beyond the Basics

Composition, value study, and placement will be discussed. This class will include painting from references of places you love, and perhaps painting outside when the weather permits.

August 7, 2024  9:00am - 4:00pm AND

August 8, 2024  9:00am - 4:00pm

Ages: Adult

Instructor: Mary Laury

Choose your price at the end of registration:

  • Pay it Forward Price: $225.00

  • Full Price: $215.00

  • Discount Price: $110.00

  • For All Price: $58.00

Concert Series: Gordon Thomas Ward

Gordon will entertain you with an evening of acoustic music and reflections about his established crowd favorites, sprinkled with songs selected from his upcoming record. There will be music to fit every mood.

Gordon Thomas Ward is a GRAMMY-balloted, folk rock, singer-songwriter who uses music and poetry to mix the ethereal world and the human condition. His songs, like the places and the people we love, are beautiful and dramatic in all their seasons.

With four albums, five books, four #1 songs, and other compositions that have charted in the U.S. and abroad, he's recorded with notable musicians such as Noel Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul, and Mary), Kevin Barry (Jackson Browne, James Taylor), Eric Troyer and Mik Kaminski (Electric Light Orchestra), and shared the stage and billing with Natalie Merchant, Christine Lavin, and Bill Staines.

Whispers from the Woods is Gordon’s fourth and most recent album, which was hailed as “a modern-day masterpiece that comes straight from the heart” by Skope Magazine. His music, says Matheson's Entertainment Blog, "Will grab you by the heart and never let go." Upcoming in 2024 is a new studio album and the first installment of a children’s literature book series.

Meetinghouse Theatre Lab - Out of the Hat!

October through April, 2023 - 2024

Out of the Hat! Readers' Theatre Series

What’s "Out of the Hat!?” It’s a fresh, compact production with a rehearsal time of one day, 7 hours, performed that same night. The play, the director, the cast are all picked "out of the hat" so to speak -- this makes it fresh and exciting.

It goes like so ... we gather at noon to read the chosen play -- many of us for the first time. After a first read, the director for the play retires to cast the show. Once done, the group works to put the play on its feet with the result being an outstanding and very fresh performance at 7pm.

Come to read and play at noon or come to watch it that evening. Admission is free, although donations are gratefully accepted.

Interested in reading? We would love to have you! To read, you will need yourself, writing utensils, dark clothes, a potluck, energy and a penchant for fun.

Please message Meetinghouse Theatre Lab on Facebook or e-mail Cathy at cathyjohnson2012@hotmail.com if you would like to be a part of the day's production.

This popular retelling of the beloved children's classic never strays far from Twain's original text. Huck Finn is an outcast. He has no mother and his father is a hopeless drunkard. The Widow Douglas takes him in but he rejects her "civilized" world and runs away. On his epic journey down the Mississippi River with a runaway slave named Jim, Huck finds acceptance for the first time in his life. He also learns responsibility, an awareness of equality, and the meaning of true friendship.

Concert Series: Jud Caswell - A Night of Irish Song

A Night of Irish Song

Multi-instrumentalist Jud Caswell celebrates the release of his "Morning Cordial Vol.2" - a collection of Irish songs recorded and released as videos during the first months of COVID lock-down.

Maine singer/songwriter Jud Caswell has got a keen eye for detail, a head full of far-away, and a heart full of home. In 2006 he burst on the national scene, winning the legendary Kerrville New Folk competition. His songs have been taught at Berklee, recorded by Judy Collins, and named “#4 Song of the Decade” by New York’s WFUV. Jud left the road to raise a family where his own roots go deep. He draws inspiration from the land like Mary Oliver, pushing gently into the specific until it unfolds into the universal. He paints his landscapes like Wyeth, with a reverence for humble beauty. And with a voice fresh as water over granite and soft as a pine needle bed, he wields his instruments with the matter-of fact deftness of an old woodsman with an axe.

Doors open at 6:30pm.

Nat Paradis is a Red Sox-loving part-time dad who manages Paradis’ Last Convenient Store, the last convenient place to get gas—or anything—before the Canadian border to the north and the North Maine Woods to the west. When an old flame returns to town, Nat gets a chance to rekindle a romance he gave up on years ago. But sparks fly as he’s forced to choose between new love and old. Last Gas takes a hilarious and heartbreakingly hard look at love lost and found, and at what it means to “get back to happy."

Meetinghouse Theatre Lab - Maine Playwright Contest Winning Play - In McClintock’s Corn by Carolyn Gage: A Staged Reading

Carolyn Gage of Southwest Harbor, Maine, has been awarded the 2023 Schoodic Arts for All Meetinghouse Theatre Lab playwright competition prize for her play, In McClintock’s Corn.

Ms. Gage will receive a $100 award and her play will be presented in a staged reading by the Theatre Lab on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 7pm at Hammond Hall in Winter Harbor.

About the Play The play features gender-non-conforming, neurodivergent geneticist Barbara McClintock and her companion/partner Harriet Creighton, and McClintock’s revolutionary quest to understand diversity in nature through her study of corn. Every scene is set in a cornfield as the play traces the friendship between the women from the Depression, to World War II, to the Civil Rights Movement, to McClintock’s long-overdue winning of the Nobel Prize in 1983. Last year, In McClintock’s Corn was named National Runner-Up for the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award, the top feminist play award in the US, given by the Women and Theatre Program of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education.

About the Author Carolyn Gage is an autistic playwright, performer, director, and activist. The author of nine anthologies of plays and eighty-eight musicals, dramas, and one-woman shows, she specializes in non-traditional roles for women, especially reclaiming famous lesbians whose stories have been distorted or erased from history. She has lived in Southwest Harbor since 2016. Gage will attend the MHTL reading of In McClintock’s Corn and participate in a Q and A at the end of the performance. Because of the small number of roles, this reading will be precast. There is no admission charge, although donations are always appreciated. If you have any questions, please email Cathy Johnson at cathyjohnson2012@hotmail.com for more information. www.carolyngage.com

About Meetinghouse Theatre Lab The Meetinghouse Theatre Lab is dedicated to creating an ensemble of performance artists who come together to excite the senses, push the limits, and transform the definition of create with the aim of growing as performers and enriching the humanity of all involved. Since 2003 the Theatre Lab has presented readings, staged readings, and full productions, both classic and contemporary, that challenge accepted social norms and values, question reality, break down the “fourth wall”, explore the notion of “truth”. Join us in the audience and spread the word to your friends, too! Admission is free, although donations are gratefully accepted. Our “Out of the Hat!” readings are on the 3rd Saturday of each month from October through April, so be sure to save the dates on your calendar.

The goal of the project was for students to learn about the people, places, and environments of our local community. "A Day In The Life" exhibit showcases what they found. Please join us. If you like getting together with others to chat and work on your own arts or crafts, visit our Connect and Create Group via Zoom on Thursday mornings from 9:30 – 11:30.

Join us for an informal get-together every Thursday morning to chat with other artists and work on your own art. Combat isolation and set aside time each week to connect with others and create art.

Art and the act of creating are vital, as is making personal connections. This group will give all of us the opportunity to set aside time each week for that connection and creativity. There is no charge, but an RSVP is required.
